post 10

While reviewing my classmates' blogs, I found many things very interesting.  First, I saw how we have all learn so much since our first post on the first day of class.  In almost every post, one my classmates said they learned a new tool.  Also, I thought my classmates' post 9 was the most interesting to read because everyone had different web-based tools that would be helpful to teachers.  I am going to consider them all when I start teaching.

I think we have covered all the basic technology skills in class.  Each of these has been extremely helpful.   Next, I would like to learn about Word Notebook.  I've never used it, so I'm wondering if there are any special things about the program.  Maybe next semester the students in this class can learn about it.

I think I will achieve my future educational technology goals by using all types of technology in my classroom.  As I've stated before, I think technology is the future of our education system.  I think by the time I'm a teacher, each student will have their own computer and most of their work will be on it.  I will have a classroom website, online homework, and worksheets on the computer to do.

A web-based resource that I might use as a teacher is Youtube.  Some of my college professors, and teachers in the past, show us short clips that help us learn the material.  These short clips are usually funny and entertaining and they get their point across.  This is a fun way to teach because short videos keep children interested.  The link to this website is: www.youtube.com

Some of the web-based resources my classmates thought would be useful are facebook and Google images.  These are both resources I might use as well.  I think there are many web-based tools that teachers can use to keep children learning in interesting ways.

Excel is a great program to use as a teacher, especially a math teacher.  It is very useful when using mean, median, mode, and scales of measurement.  It’s also helpful when making charts and graphs.  Its very easy to input numbers into Excel and the program creates a graph for you.  For example, third graders can calculate mean, median, and mode by themselves and then with a click of a button they can calculate standard deviation.

For my final project, we will be writing to get new telescopes for the astronomy classes at our school.  We will need computers and other technology equipments. We will create a budget.

I think my Powerpoint 2 assignment was very good.  I enjoyed learning how to make a game on a powerpoint; I had always been interested as to how people had made them.  My screen designs were interesting and so were my questions.  The navigation is easy and my spelling was correct.  Overall, I think I followed all the guidelines almost perfectly.

There are many ways to teach with computer-based technologies.  In the past, my teachers have used projectors and DVD players to teach.  I think I will use scanners, copiers, and cameras to teach when I become a teacher.  The pictures taken by cameras could be inserted into projects done by the students.

In the last week, I learned to create a standalone hypermedia program.  I will use this as a teacher to create games to teach the students in a fun way.  I learned how to make navigation buttons so I can jump around to different slides.  Powerpoint is a very useful tool and I know I will use it several times in the my teaching career.

There are many positive and negative things about using presentation software in the K-12 classroom.  Some advantages are that you can edit and format the text and information you are presenting to the classroom.  A teacher can also make a slideshow and use graphics to teach using presentation software.  Some disadvantages are that the teachers don't learn the material they are teaching as well because they figure they can just read off the slides.  If the teachers do have a lot of information on the slides, students wont listen to them because they are too busy trying to read the slides themselves.  Also, sometimes technology messes up, so then it's hard to redo a lesson plan on the spot.

Powerpoint is a very useful tool.  With powerpoint, students learn to see relationships among facts.  This is helpful because when students organize isolated facts into a presentation, they remember the facts better.  Also, when students see relationships among facts, they often generalize and come to understand some problem or process more deeply.  For a project, I will make my students use Internet resources to research the information.  Then they will put it onto a powerpoint and present it to the classroom.  Powerpoint can be effective at any age and grade level.

I think technology in education is the future of our classrooms.  I have a few questions as to why educational institues aren't spending more money to make sure the students are using techonolgy daily.  I think teachers should use more technology in their lesson plans.

I think Web 2.0 technologies in K-12 education is a positive thing. I believe I would use them in my classroom. Web 2.0 technologies allow the students to do more than just retrive information from the Internet. Web 2.0 websites usually included these things: Search button, Links, Tags, Extenstions, and Signals. All these are helpful when using the Internet.

I think Wikipedia is a great learning source. Most of the articles are short and include a great overview of the topic. Whenever I am curiouis about a topic, I use Wikipedia to learn. Although anyone can write on it, I still think its alright for students to use it. The only time I wouldn't allow students to use it is during a formal project or paper, where they need to site their sources, because then they need 100% reliable sources.

In the past week I have learned so much with technology. All the things in the past 3 months I will use in my classtroom when I teach. The powerpoints are a main thing I will use in my educational career because its easy for students to learn off of them!

I think the Internet is very useful to use to support student research.  There are times when it is not though.  Some useful parts are the information is not limited to text and pictures (as in printed books), it has animation, audio, and video.  Two things that can complicate student research is that the quality of information on the Internet is highly variable and it can be copied directly into a word processor.

There are many other ways I will use web-based recourses to support student learning too.  One way will be using search engines, such as google, yahoo, and dogpile.  I also might use virtual classroom if a student is ill and cannot make it to class.  There are several web-based resources that are helpful to support student learning.

I think it is very important to be a teacher who supervises their students in a technology environment since there are so many bad things that can be put on the internet.  No matter what their age, I will make sure they don't put any personal information on the internet such as address, age, phone number, etc.  For elementary and middle school students, I would show them search engines such as KidsClick and Ask Jeeves for Kids.  For high school students, I would show them Google and Yahoo.

As a teacher, I plan to use several of the concepts presented in Chapter 7, like outlines, idea maps, and flow charts. I will have to have computers in my classroom to teach my students these skills. These concepts can be used in several different ways.

I will absolutely require (and encourage) my students to develop outline, idea map, and storyboarding skills. I believe technology is taking over our future so all students should know the most that they can. These are also ways to stay organized, and many students need that. I believe these skills will help them in the future.

In the past week, I learned how to use Inspiration. I find this tool extremely helpful. I can organize information quickly, and it is easy for others to read. I will use this tool in my educational career when I'm teaching lessons because I feel students can understand it.
